The Hummer was introduced to the end user market by GM and it quickly acquired recognition due, partly, to being an overwhelming vehicle that could handle almost any type of terrain. Granted the Hummer 2 and H3 was no where near as great as the very first Hummer when going off road but these models still came across a market place as they where large, luxurious and cheaper than the H1. They where also transformed into things like limousines, another thing that further established them as something exclusive in the heads of movie stars and the average Joe alike. Then Hummer introduced the Hummer HX concept that took it all to an entirely new level. The new sleek futuristic styling made a lot of people including myself want a Hummer hx. We all eagerly waited to see the car go into manufacturing

Then came the credit crunch that hit American car manufacturers hard and none perhaps harder than GM. In an effort to reduce the large losses the organization were suffering from it was decided to reduce the model line and sell or close down certain brand names. Hummer was one of those manufacturers. GM initially found a Chinese buyer for the hummer brand but the deal was not approved by the government and GM decided to close down Hummer manufacturing in the absence of a buyer. With that decision they essentially killed the possibilities of us seeing the Hummer HX on the roads unless someone resumes development and dust of the designs at a later date. This also meant that it is no longer possible to buy a new hummer as none are being produced. Well not for civilian use anyway. It is still possible to get military surplus Hummers.

Typically the hummer has never been known as an inexpensive car. They were expensive to buy and were real gas guzzlers. Add to this that the second hand price wasn't great and it is easy to see how hummers didn't make great investments. However now when the production has been shut down all that could change. Iconic cars tend to see an increased second hand value when manufacturing ended and the Hummer is an Iconic car. We might not have seen much of an effect on the second hand price of hummers due to this so far but we are likely to see it in a couple of years and the second hand price of a hummer is in other words likely to start going up in a few years. Buying an used Hummer today might therefore turn out to be a good investment. Granted they are still gas guzzlers and with the high fuel prices they might still be poor investments if you intend to use them while waiting for the second hand price to start going up, but at the very least you can obtain some of the cash you spent on gas back when you sell it and in the meantime you can enjoy the pleasure of driving a truly iconic car.

It is however important to remember, as with all investments, there are no assured bets and there is no guarantee that the second hand price will go up. It just seems probably due to reasons outlined above. It is however possible that the green movement and hybrid cars will make large cars less attractive to everyone. Something that could force the second hand values down.
